More than 90% of foreign visitors enter Japan through Haneda Airport or Narita Airport. After that, many travelers move from Tokyo to Nagoya by Shinkansen. This is because Nagoya serves as a hub station for accessing some of the largest ski resorts in western Japan.
There are many ski resorts where you can fully enjoy JAPOW, such as Dynaland and Takasu Snow Park. On the other hand, the area around Nagoya Station is complicated, and transferring between the Shinkansen, trains, subways, and buses can be difficult. Even as a Japanese person, I sometimes get lost.
In particular, Aichi Prefecture has two airports, which can easily be confused. In this article, we clearly explain the differences between the two airports, access from Nagoya, travel times, and important points to note.
1. What Is Chubu Centrair International Airport?
Chubu Centrair International Airport is an international airport built on an artificial island in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture. It is the main air gateway for Nagoya and the Chubu region. If you are departing Japan on an international flight, this is the airport you will use.
There are many routes connecting Japan with Asia. Although it is an international airport, it also operates many domestic flights. In particular, there are regular routes to major domestic airports, mainly operated by Japanese low-cost carriers (LCCs).
Features
- For international flights, use Centrair
- International routes connecting Asia
- Domestic routes connecting major cities in Japan
2. What Is Nagoya Airport?
Nagoya Airport is located in the northern part of Nagoya City and mainly serves domestic flights. Currently, there are no scheduled international flights, and it is primarily used for routes to regional cities within Japan.
Features
- Domestic flights only
- Domestic routes connecting regional cities
For travelers moving within Japan—especially those heading to Hokkaido or regional cities—this airport is an efficient option.
3. Access from Nagoya Station and Travel Time
Access to Chubu Centrair International Airport
From Nagoya city, the most convenient way to reach Chubu Centrair International Airport is by train.
- Meitetsu Nagoya Station → Chubu Centrair International Airport Station
- Use the Meitetsu Limited Express “μ-SKY”
- Travel time: approximately 30–40 minutes
The train station is directly connected to the airport, making it easy to travel even with large suitcases. This route is also very easy for foreign travelers to understand.
However, please note that the departure station is different from JR Nagoya Station, which is used by the Shinkansen and JR local lines. Meitetsu Nagoya Station is a private railway station located underground. When using map apps, we recommend searching specifically for “Meitetsu Nagoya.”
In route search apps, please set the departure point to “Meitetsu-Nagoya” and the destination to “Centrair Japan Intl Airport.”
Access to Nagoya Airport
Nagoya Airport does not have a direct train connection from Nagoya Station. Therefore, the following method is mainly used.
- Nagoya Station → Airport bus
- Travel time: approximately 20–30 minutes (depending on traffic conditions)
Because the number of bus services is limited, it is important to check the timetable in advance. The bus stop is located outside Nagoya Station.
Using a map app, search for “Midland Square” and walk toward the tall skyscraper. The bus stop is located in front of the Dior store on the first floor of the building.
In route search apps, please set the departure point to “Nagoya Eki mae{Airport Shuttle Bus}” and the destination to “Nagoya Kuko{Airport Shuttle Bus}.”
4. Travel Time and How to Choose the Right Airport
| Item | Chubu Centrair International Airport | Nagoya Airport |
|---|---|---|
| Main routes | International + domestic flights | Domestic flights only |
| Travel time from Nagoya Station | 30–40 minutes | 20–30 minutes |
| Transportation | Train | Bus |
| Fare | 980 yen | 700 yen |
5. Important Points for Foreign Travelers
Pay Attention to the Airport Name
If you only see the name “Nagoya Airport,” it may not be clear which airport it refers to. When checking flight tickets or reservations, be sure to confirm the airport code.
- NGO → Chubu Centrair International Airport
- NKM → Nagoya Airport
International Flights Operate Only from Centrair
If you are entering Japan from overseas, you must use Chubu Centrair International Airport. It is not possible to enter or leave Japan on international flights from Nagoya Airport.
Allow Extra Time for Transfers
Because Nagoya Airport is small, facilities and dining options are limited. Especially early in the morning or late at night, choices are few. We recommend eating in advance or preparing accordingly.
Conclusion: Choosing the Right Airport Makes Your Nagoya Trip More Comfortable
Although Chubu Centrair International Airport and Nagoya Airport have similar names, their roles and usage are completely different. If you go to the wrong airport, your travel schedule may be disrupted.
Be sure to check your departure point and timetable in advance and simulate your route beforehand. Also, if you ask a Japanese person nearby for help, they will almost certainly answer kindly.
