Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort Opened Ahead of Others!

Blog

While several ski resorts that were scheduled to open last weekend announced delays, Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort began operations on November 29. Located in the northernmost part of Nagano Prefecture, Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort has become one of Japan’s leading snow resorts and is increasingly attracting attention from overseas skiers and snowboarders. In this article, we explain what makes Nozawa Onsen—opening earlier than other resorts—so special.

1. Natural Powder That Captivates the World & a Vast Ski Area

Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is one of Japan’s premier ski areas, known for its high-quality natural powder snow and vast terrain. It offers approximately 44 km of skiable runs, a maximum run of about 10 km, and a vertical drop of 1085 m, providing a large-scale environment that accommodates everyone from beginners to advanced riders. The “Yamabiko Area” at the summit is especially popular for its light powder and stunning views. The resort also offers abundant ungroomed and tree-run zones, which are highly rated by international powder seekers.

Convenience is another major advantage. The modern Nagasaka Gondola provides fast and comfortable access between the base and the summit. With English-friendly ski schools and well-equipped rental shops, the resort is easy to use for beginners and international visitors. Additionally, the ski area sits right next to the historic hot spring village, allowing guests to enjoy 13 traditional public baths (“soto-yu”) immediately after skiing. As a resort where natural snow, hot springs, and traditional Japanese culture blend seamlessly, Nozawa Onsen continues to be extremely popular among travelers.

2. Conditions as of December 3

Blessed with early-season snowfall, the resort opened on November 29. However, due to a lack of snowfall afterward and several days of clear weather, snow levels have decreased. From December 2 onward, operations have been limited as follows. The “Yamabiko Area,” located at an elevation of 1407 m, currently has 35 cm of snow. There is no snow cover in the other areas.

The Yamabiko D Course is located in the summit area. Upon arriving at the ski resort, visitors take the Nagasaka Gondola to reach the top area, and then ride the Yamabiko No.2 Four Lift. Because it is currently not possible to ski back down to the base, you must take the Nagasaka Gondola back down when leaving the summit area.

3. Forecast

From December 3 onward, sufficient snowfall is forecast due to an approaching cold front.

  • Dec 3: Snow mixed with rain. Temperatures are relatively high, meaning wet snow or sleet at the base.
  • Dec 4: Temperatures drop, with a chance of snow — more winter-like conditions.
  • Dec 5: Snow mixed with rain or sleet. Temperatures remain low.
  • Dec 6 onward: Possible clear weather on Sunday, followed by light snow and intermittent snowfall. Daytime temperatures stay relatively low, making accumulation likely.

→ The weather is gradually becoming more winter-like, and snow is expected to return little by little.
Based on the current forecast, snowfall is expected this week and into next week. If conditions align, there is a strong possibility that the entire ski area could reopen around mid-December to the 20th.

Summary

Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is a ski area where visitors can enjoy exceptional JAPOW (Japanese powder snow). However, because snowfall has been limited recently, current snow quality is not yet at a level where JAPOW can be fully enjoyed. Full-area operations are likely to begin around mid-December. Please check ski area updates frequently when planning your trip. This blog will continue to deliver the latest information as quickly as possible.
